Sorry, Come again? Why is it so challenging to understand Native English Speakers?

“I don’t understand native speakers.” This is something we hear all the time from language learners. Why is it so challenging to understand Native English Speakers?

The truth is that conversational English is very different from textbook English, and casual English is often very different from the formal English you might be used to in the workplace.

So why is this such a common challenge? First, native speakers speak fast. They use slang, shorten words, and connect sounds in ways that can be difficult to follow. So how do we help our clients build confidence and develop their listening skills?

First, with Sprach you practice with an international team of coaches, including native and native-level speakers. Why is this effective? Because you are exposed to different regional accents, expressions, and slang.

Second, our sessions are conversation-based and conducted 100% in English. From your very first session, we encourage you to start speaking and interacting. Our conversations blend grammar and business English with natural, everyday communication.

Finally, we believe in full immersion. Your practice shouldn’t end when the Zoom session closes. We encourage our clients to live an English life.

How? Listen to podcasts while you drive to work or exercise at the gym. Change the language on your phone to English. Watch YouTube videos, movies, and series made for English-speaking audiences, not just for learners.

Some concrete tips:

  • If you struggle to understand at first, don’t worry. You can slow down the playback speed or turn on subtitles.
  • Thinking about learning something new or starting a new hobby? Great, do it in English. That’s how you truly live the language.
  • Most importantly, take every opportunity to speak. Don’t worry about making mistakes,  they’re a natural part of the learning process.
